CoLinux

CoLinux is a great OS because it runs on, and during the operation of your windows enviroment. One of the features I love is the ability to run CoLinuX simultaneously with windows (at a high speed). It does run as close to, as fast as a normal Linux OS would, as if it were installed on your hard disk, and you were to boot into it. Other distros within an emulated enviroment run really sluggish; to a point where you don't really want to use them at all. Many have claimed CoLinux is hard to setup, but I believe it's neither difficult or easy. It takes work, hours of work. The distro doesn't really come with a self install utility and you have to do everything manually (well if you want it running properly). It does offer an out-of-the-box setup process that will get you running a CoLinux terminal within a minute of installing it. But, that's no fun and your limited. I can only hope that through this site you'll see how easy it can be to setup and you won't get discouraged. Well, let's get on with my CoLinux experience.

Summary

This site is dedicated to the LinuX distro I love to use. Simply because it has what I'm looking for and I can run it along side with Vista. I'll start off with how and where to find it. Followed by a brief intro of why I use it and chose to use it. The getting started section will walk you through the process of installing and setting everything up. I'll list the modifications I've done and explain my reasoning. Provide some things I had to download and why I had to. Followed by a list of various places where you can find support (other than here) and finally the screenshots of my CoLinux/Xming/kde 3.5 OS on MS Vista.

By the way, I'm running the Gentoo file system with CoLinux, so I'll link and offer infomation regarding Gentoo.

Where to find it CoLinux has been around for some time now and it may be available through various sites. Some places don't last as long as others and I'll only link back to official CoLinux sites...

Why I use it For the longest time, I've been searching for a good Linux-open source solution that I could use simultaneously with the Windows operating environment. I Love linux, but haven't been able to completely rid myself of the MS-OS. I'm some what of a gamer and we all know the PC industry revolutionized the gaming world of today. All gamers rely on MS and I'm stuck with it. MS did a great job of getting their OS in everyones homes and it's here to stay. I hate the option of shutting down one OS to boot another. Using multiple pc's at once and having my desktop running while streaming a xserver across my network. CoLinux has the option of running on my laptop along side with Vista. Using Xming, I can stream a desktop into colinux within one machine. I love it and now I have the best of both worlds. I've configured kde 3.5 and the performance is great. There were some issues, but for the meantime checkout the screen shots and follow thru on getting started.

Getting Started This section describes what I went through to setup and install CoLinux. I've managed to get it running and it's stable, despite what others have experienced. The time consuming part of my installation was the download and installation of kde3.5. What a process, that took a few hours over a period of 3 days (I'm not a fan of leaving my laptop on non-stop). Anyway, head over to the main getting started page ...

My CoLinux Modifications So far I haven't really done anything special to claim it a significant modification to CoLinux. But,

I've added another file system for storage,
moved some junk over to it,
installed a few things to work with it
and minorly modified a few files here and there.

Recommended DL's Here's a list of the programs I downloaded. While following other setup logs, I noticed they required of me to use programs that I didn't have installed. Installating packages is the time consuming process of getting CoLinux running. Read all about it in the recommended dl's section.

Places for Support There are many places were you can obtain support for CoLinux. That's how I was able to pick up on it and get it going. The only problem I ran into was spending a tremendous amount of time through various sites, learning about CoLinux. I hope my compliation of support sites would save a lot of people from wasting precious time searching for the right places.

Here's the list of other places for support.
